FROM THE PRESIDENT
Sylvia Keith ARPS APAGB

I am having a very busy season, visiting Clubs both to lecture and judge and also be present at Exhibitions and Anniversaries all round the Federation.

One very enjoyable occasion was the actual 100th anniversary day of Cambridge Camera Club when a fascinating presentation showed slides of Cambridge in the past and we cut a wonderful silver and black cake fashioned very cleverly in the form of a camera that they had had made. David Stout, the President, and his members were delighted with the Club’s achievement and David read out the report of the first meeting, 60 gentlemen –no women- who solemnly agreed to start a club to promote photography in the area. I wondered what their reaction would have been to the happy evening we had 100 years later, with a woman as President of the Federation, (which had not been formed then), and the cheerful chat that was now going on. I wonder what form the meeting will take in 2102?

Another invitation was to the preview of Welwyn GC’s show that contained some excellent images and was very well staged at an Arts Centre in the town. I also attended Ware’s exhibition, which showed how digital photography has become very popular, and this show had beautiful uses of digital images using a variety of art papers.

It was very sad to have to cancel the Judges’ Workshop this November; only 17 new and established judges booked to attend and Robert Good and I decided it was not economically or socially viable with that number. The Committee spends a lot of time deciding on the events And in other Federations our tradition of training judges is envied. So why do our judges not think they can benefit from honing their skills and sharing their problems and successes with others?
Is there another way of running the day that would attract more? Would a different time of the year be better? Do let us hear from you. We are anxious to keep up the high standard of our judges so that our clubs can benefit from their expertise and constructive help.
Finally, I wish you all a very happy Christmas and look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at Federation and Club events.

A MERRY CHRISTMAS
and
A SUCCESSFUL NEW YEAR

I have been delighted that such an eminent photographer as Sir George Pollock has been persuaded to write an article for The Bulletin. (See page 4).
I do hope that everyone will read the article and consider what Sir George has to say.
If you have any comments do write and let us all have the benefit of your observations.
