LETTERS

From Les Borg

I read the Autumn 2002 issue of Bulletin with great interest, particularly the debates on DI, but what really caught my eye, with some amusement, is the comment that "those clubs that encourage all forms of photography attract the most members". I am

Secretary of Lee Valley Nature Photographers; our membership up to October 1st. 2002 was 110. This figure fluctuates from year to year, but usually ends up around the 100 mark. We have a large turnover; I guess that it may stem from the perception that we do not provide what is wanted. However, in attempting to ask what is wanted, we get little in the way of answers from the membership. One or two individuals respond with something additional or different from what we have done before, which to my mind suggests that we are largely "doing it right”. Those people who leave us rarely let us know why, but never have I had a comment that we are not suitable for their requirements.
But the main point is; as a specialist society, we have a large membership. Few clubs can boast that number, or anywhere near. I suspect that the large membership is due to the specialist nature of the club and the fact that we will not hold competitions. Some of our members are also members of another club/s and they find that our policy on competitions is refreshing - it takes away the side effects of competition - the jealousies, the rancour etc. These of course are negative human traits that we should suppress; but I'm afraid we live in the real world and those traits do exist.
But returning to the point of specialism; because of it, there are few clubs in the country engaged solely in Natural History photography. I know of only one other and that is the RPS Nature Group, of which I am a member. This is bound to attract people with such an interest and we have members as far away as Perth and the Midlands. If any readers are interested in our club, they may contact me via our web site www.lvnaturephotographers.org.uk or directly to me les@les-borg-photography.co.uk. If there are any other clubs specialising in Natural History, then please contact me. Originally, we were hoping that similar clubs would spring up over other parts of the country; then we could network and may be use each other’s facilities. We have three locations within the Lee Valley Park with hides provided by the Park Authority and each one has a pond in front of it to attract wildlife. There is also another site in my village (Tewin), which is a nature reserve, managed by the Herts. & Middx. Wildlife Trust. Again there is a hide and pond there as well.

NEWS FROM THE CLUBS
Felixstowe PS are delighted to announce that the club has been granted an award of £2,214 from the National Lottery, “Awards for All” scheme. The money has been used to fund a much needed club slide projector (Kodak Carousel) and some large print display boards in time for the August 2002 and also future exhibitions of their work to the public.
The Exhibition, which was formally opened by the Mayor of Felixstowe, was voted a phenomenal success, when over the 3-day period, well over 500 people attended! Over 200 prints were on display together with a continuous showing of as many slides with our new projector. Our local press gave them a super double-page spread to advertise the event a day before the opening. The club also made £60 for catalogue sales together with the clubhouse “landladies” the Girl Guides who made £100 for the sale of refreshments!
Now for some bad news; the Girl Guides have decided that their HQ in the grounds of Deben High School be closed immediately for safety reasons. As this building is also the clubhouse, Felixstowe PS was left homeless! The Guides, also homeless, are desperate for funding to build a new head quarters and are hoping for a lottery grant once they have raised half of the required outlay.
The good news is that the Society has found a new venue for our meetings, which is at: - The Senior Citizens Centre, Orwell, Felixstowe.
At the final club meeting at the Guide Headquarters on the 12th Sept, some 27 members attended to witness the presentation of a donation of £150 from the Photographic Society, to the Girl Guides in aid of their building fund. Pam Thwaites, from the Colneis Division, was delighted to accept the cheque on behalf of the Guides.

Scratched Slides
Some of us at Chelmsford CC have recently received slide films back from Fuji Processing at Leamington Spa with scratches running the length of the film. This has affected Sensia but not Provia film, both mounted and unmounted. The response from the Head of their laboratory has been that ‘They were caused during transportation of the film either through the camera body, splicer or mounter’ (this referring to a process only, unmounted film returned to them still unmounted!).
If you have suffered film damage by Fuji during 2002, I shall be very grateful to hear from you to strengthen my case in the continuing argument with them.

Punch Line
A group of young ladies in a restaurant decided to have their photograph taken. One of the group produced her camera and the shot was duly taken.
An eminent amateur photographer was dining nearby and he offered to take a picture of the whole group. After taking the shot he suggested that he took another as insurance. ‘’No thank you’, said the young lady with a smile, ‘I always ask for a second set to be printed’.
